Some of the things we started to learn

It has been an awesome week to start a school year. Despite the hot weather initially, the children were having a great time to bond during circle time and learn some of the things that are essential to Grade 1.

Our math activity centered around data management, specifically the making of bar graphs and interpreting the data. The challenge is to make Grade 1 students understand what bar graphs are and how to interpret a graph when presented to them. What better way to make them understand but to graph the number of boys and girls in school! The boys were not happy when they found out there were more girls than boys! After introducing the vocabulary in math to use concerning bar graphs throughout the week (data, horizontal axis, vertical axis, title, labels), one boy said on Friday that the 'data' is going to change now because we got one new boy and therefore it is a tie! We will have to change the data when Monday comes.

During language, we talked about the 5 W's: Who, What, Where, When and Why. We made a news plan about the General Assembly that we had and how Ms. Dingley talked about rules and regulations to be followed in school in order for us to be safe. And we also wrote and talked about the 5 W's in a story that we read. Students will be made aware of the 5 W's whenever we read a story in class. For this week, the kids were proud that we have read 7 stories... 93 more to go before we can have a party!

We also wrote our list of words starting with the letter 'Aa'. And the kids wrote in their dictionary journal certain words that started with the letter 'Aa'. Please encourage them to write words that start with letter 'Aa' at home.

In computer time, we went to a website Starfall - All About Me . The kids had fun with it while learning about vocabulary and computers.

A letter has been sent home as well to give you an idea on how to support your child's learning at home.
